The federal government has begun work on the Rs5.5 billion expansion of Dera Ghazi Khan Airport, with completion targeted for January 2028. Federal Energy Minister Sardar Awais Ahmad Khan Leghari confirmed that the Civil Aviation Authority is carrying out expansion activities, including runway improvements, to facilitate international flights. The work was reported on October 20, 2026. The upgrade is part of a broader development initiative that also includes a cancer hospital, sewerage infrastructure and road improvements. Government announcements are also published by the Press Information Department.
Why January 2028 Is a Target
The completion date is a target. January 2028 is about 15 months from now (our own calculation). The reports we have seen do not say how much of the work is done, how it is funded or what could delay it. We therefore describe the date as the stated goal and not as a guarantee.
What the Expansion Includes
The work includes runway improvements to facilitate international flights. The reports do not say whether any airline has agreed to fly there, which destinations are planned or when international service might begin. An upgrade to allow international flights does not by itself mean that such flights will operate.
The Wider Development Initiative
The airport is part of a broader initiative that also includes a cancer hospital, sewerage infrastructure and road improvements. The reports do not give costs or timelines for these other projects, so we cannot say how they relate to the Rs5.5 billion for the airport.
Why Connectivity Matters for Property
Improved connectivity and public infrastructure could support future commercial development, hospitality investment and business activity in South Punjab. These effects depend on the projects being completed and used. The reports do not suggest that property prices will rise, and we do not predict it. Property-price increases are not guaranteed.
What This Means for Investors, Businesses and Residents
Investors and businesses interested in South Punjab should watch for confirmed flights, hospitality and commercial projects, and the completion of the related roads and hospital. Residents should not expect changes before the work advances. The signals to watch are progress reports from the CAA, airline announcements, the opening of the other projects and any change to the January 2028 target.
