Meezan Bank has surpassed Rs3.05 billion in cumulative housing finance disbursements under the government's Wazir-e-Azam Apna Ghar Programme, known as Ghar Ho Tu Apna (GHTA), according to Bloom Pakistan, published 10 August 2026. Biz Today corroborated the milestone the same day, describing it as part of the bank's strategic focus on affordable housing finance for salaried individuals.
The Numbers Behind the Milestone
Through its Easy Home financing solution, Meezan Bank has helped 490 families become homeowners using 100% Shariah-compliant structures. Beyond disbursed funds, the bank has approved more than 3,000 housing finance applications under GHTA, with approved financing crossing Rs22.557 billion — a pipeline officials say could generate substantially more disbursements as customers complete their property purchases. Ahmed Ali Siddiqui, Meezan Bank's Group Head of Consumer Finance and Digital Banking, said the disbursement figures reflect strong customer confidence in the bank's Shariah-compliant housing finance solutions, and that the bank remains committed to expanding access through its branch network and dedicated housing finance teams.
What the Ghar Ho Tu Apna Scheme Actually Offers
The Wazir-e-Azam Apna Ghar Programme was launched by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on 30 April 2026 as a nationwide housing finance initiative, backed by Rs321 billion in financing for its first year and an initial target of 50,000 homes, according to Profit by Pakistan Today. The government aims to scale that to 500,000 houses over four years, with the scheme applying nationwide across all four provinces plus Gilgit-Baltistan and Azad Kashmir. Under the framework, first-time homeowners can access financing of up to Rs10 million for a house up to 10 marla or a flat up to 1,500 square feet, with a markup rate fixed at 5 percent for the first 10 years of a maximum 20-year tenure, after which standard market rates apply. The minimum equity contribution is 10 percent, meaning the bank finances up to 90 percent loan-to-value.
Which Banks Are Participating
GHTA operates through commercial banks, Islamic banks, microfinance institutions, and the House Building Finance Corporation, with each institution conducting its own credit assessment within the government's broad framework. Besides Meezan Bank, other participating institutions include Allied Bank, Bank Alfalah, Askari Bank, and Bank AL Habib, each offering the scheme's standard subsidised-markup structure through their own branch networks. Applicants must be Pakistani citizens holding a valid CNIC who don't already own a housing unit and haven't benefited from any other government housing finance scheme.
Why This Matters for Pakistan's Housing Market
Meezan Bank's disbursement milestone is one of the clearer early signals of how much traction GHTA is gaining on the ground, beyond the scheme's announced targets. A Rs22.557 billion approved-but-undisbursed pipeline at just one participating bank suggests significant latent demand for affordable, Shariah-compliant housing finance among salaried Pakistanis — a segment that has traditionally struggled to access conventional mortgage products. As more approved applicants complete their property purchases over the coming months, this could translate into real transaction volume in the affordable housing segment specifically, rather than the investment-driven plot and file trading that has historically dominated Pakistan's property market.
What This Means for Prospective Buyers
Salaried individuals who don't currently own property and are exploring GHTA financing should compare offerings across participating banks, since markup structure, processing timelines, and property-type eligibility (house vs. flat, size caps) can vary by institution even within the same government framework. Buyers using GHTA financing to purchase in a housing society should also independently verify the scheme's legal and NOC status before committing funds — a step covered in milkiyat.com's guide to verifying housing societies through the NAB Online Property Information System, since a subsidised loan doesn't protect a buyer from purchasing into an illegal or unapproved scheme.
