The Punjab government has fixed August 14, 2026 as the inauguration date for the long-delayed Rawalpindi Ring Road, with Dawn reporting the 38.3-kilometre project's asphalt work complete and the provincial government set to formally announce an opening date. The Express Tribune corroborated the August 14 target, reporting that affected landowners plan to protest at the ceremony over unpaid compensation.
The project has missed five earlier targets - December 30, 2025, March 30, May 30, June 15, and June 22 - largely due to a legal dispute over the no-objection certificate (NOC) for a 102-kanal, 14-marla service area along the route. The controversy has twice triggered the removal of the Rawalpindi commissioner and deputy commissioner, with Salman Ghani and Nadeem Nasir now holding those posts respectively.
Hundreds of landowners across seven settlements - including Kahi Mirbaz, Khengar Kalan, Hoshial, and Kamalpur - say their land was acquired for the project but no compensation award or payment rate has been issued despite the road's completion. A delegation led by former union council chairman Zia Mehmood and PML-N focal person Raja Ilyas Kayani has asked Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz to settle claims before August 14, warning they will protest with their children at the inauguration if payments remain unresolved.
The main carriageway from Banth Interchange to the motorway link, along with the Banth, Chak Beli Khan, Adiala, and Chakri interchanges, has been carpeted and completed. Work on eight toll plazas and 16 toll booths, along with the Thalian Interchange under Phase II, remains in progress.
