Punjab's Housing Secretary reviewed construction progress on two major water infrastructure projects in Faisalabad on September 18, 2026, a 33 MGD Eastern Wastewater Treatment Plant being developed with Danish cooperation and a 30 MGD Surface Water Treatment Plant Phase II supported by French cooperation. Together, the two projects are expected to add 63 million gallons per day of capacity and benefit more than 1.3 million residents once complete.
What Each Project Covers
The Eastern Wastewater Treatment Plant is designed to process 33 million gallons of wastewater daily, addressing sanitation and environmental needs for a city that has long struggled with inadequate wastewater treatment capacity relative to its population growth. The Surface Water Treatment Plant Phase II, supported through French cooperation, adds a further 30 million gallons per day of treated surface water capacity, building on an earlier 25 MGD surface water treatment plant already under construction and a separate expansion of the Jhal Water Treatment Plant that is adding another 5 MGD. Housing Secretary Noorul Amin Mengal said the provision of clean drinking water to Faisalabad residents remained among the Punjab government's priorities, and described the projects as environment friendly investments meant to significantly improve the availability of clean drinking water across the city.
Which Parts of Faisalabad Stand to Benefit
According to Express Tribune reporting on the review, the projects are expected to serve residents in Ahmed Nagar, Rachna Town, and Ilahiabad, along with densely populated areas along Jaranwala Road and Satiana Road, corridors that have seen substantial residential growth in recent years without a matching expansion in water and wastewater infrastructure. Bringing treatment capacity closer to population growth in these specific localities is a meaningful shift from treating water infrastructure as a citywide average concern toward targeting the corridors where demand has clearly outpaced existing supply.
Why Water and Wastewater Capacity Matters for Development
Reliable water supply and wastewater treatment capacity are foundational requirements for any sustained residential or commercial development, and areas that lack this infrastructure typically see development stall or rely on costly private alternatives such as bore wells and private tankers regardless of how much housing demand exists. Faisalabad's continued residential expansion along corridors like Jaranwala Road and Satiana Road has been outpacing the city's existing water and sanitation capacity for some time, making these two projects a direct response to a constraint that has been building rather than a purely precautionary investment.
What This Means for Faisalabad's Property Market
For property buyers, developers, and investors looking at Faisalabad specifically, added water and wastewater treatment capacity in Ahmed Nagar, Rachna Town, Ilahiabad, and the Jaranwala and Satiana Road corridors is a genuine positive signal for the long term liveability and development potential of those localities. Utility capacity of this kind is one of the more reliable indicators that an area is being prepared for sustained growth rather than left to develop informally, and areas gaining treated water and wastewater capacity now are likely to be better positioned for continued residential and commercial development over the coming years compared to parts of the city without similar infrastructure investment.
