Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz has ordered a survey of all dilapidated buildings in every city immediately after the monsoon season, alongside early completion of Phase-I of the Punjab Development Programme (PDP), according to Dawn, published 8 August 2026. The Express Tribune and Pakistan Observer corroborated the directive, issued during a special PDP review meeting in Lahore.
Why the Survey Was Ordered
Pakistan Today reported the directive followed the recent Baghbanpura building collapse in Lahore, where Deputy Commissioner Captain (retd) Ali Ijaz remained at the site for 27 hours until the last trapped person was rescued. The province-wide survey is meant to identify unsafe structures before the next monsoon spell and reduce the risk of similar collapses in older, poorly maintained buildings across Punjab's cities.
What Else Was Decided at the Meeting
Deputy commissioners from across the province joined the review via video link. The chief minister directed authorities to submit an impact study report on sewerage and drainage projects, and reviewed PDP progress in over 20 cities, including Vehari, Burewala, Jaranwala, Muridke, Kabirwala, Attock, Toba Tek Singh, Wazirabad, and Bahawalnagar. She ordered a case study of PDP Phase-I along with compiled public feedback on the programme, and separately reviewed progress reports for Sahiwal, Faisalabad, Multan, Gujranwala, Sheikhupura, Nankana Sahib, Rawalpindi, and Sialkot.
Recognition for Monsoon Response
Maryam Nawaz praised deputy commissioners, assistant commissioners, WASA officials, and Suthra Punjab teams for their monsoon performance, singling out the Lahore and Gujranwala administrations for handling flooding and rescue operations. She noted that newly installed sewerage systems had visibly improved drainage in several cities during this year's rains.
What This Means for Property Owners and Buyers
A province-wide dilapidated-buildings survey could affect older properties and commercial structures flagged as unsafe, particularly in dense city cores where renovation costs are already climbing — a trend covered in milkiyat.com's 2026 construction cost breakdown. Owners of aging buildings should expect closer scrutiny going forward, echoing the verification push detailed in milkiyat.com's guide to the NAB Online Property Information System. The move also fits a broader pattern of tightened enforcement across Punjab, similar to milkiyat.com's coverage of RDA Green Property Certificates and CDA crackdowns in the twin cities.
