The Pakistan Meteorological Department issued a flood alert for Rawalpindi's Nullah Lai on 19 August 2026, after three consecutive days of rainfall across the twin cities since Monday. PMD warned that heavy rain expected over the following two to four hours could cause water to accumulate in low lying areas and raise water levels further in local nullahs, particularly Nullah Lai, as an active weather system over Islamabad and Gujar Khan continued bringing thunderstorms to Rawalpindi, Islamabad, Taxila, Wah Cantt, Attock, Jhelum, Murree, Kallar Syedan and Gujar Khan.

How High the Water Rose

Rawalpindi's administration sounded flood warning sirens as heavy rain intensified through the day, with the water level at Katarian crossing 22 feet and reaching 16 feet near Gawalmandi Bridge, up from earlier readings of 19 feet and 15 feet respectively. Rainfall later eased, allowing levels to fall, with Katarian dropping to 17 feet from 21 feet and Gawalmandi settling at 17 feet, though intermittent rain continued through the day and PMD forecast further rain, wind and thundershowers across several upper and central areas.

A Fatality Reported

At least one death has been linked to this spell of rain. A woman reportedly drowned in the Soan River after a low lying area was inundated, following torrential rain that began late Tuesday night. Water also entered the gynaecology and paediatrics outpatient department of Holy Family Hospital, affecting medical services at one of Rawalpindi's principal public hospitals, a 1,100 bed facility affiliated with Rawalpindi Medical University that has served the city since 1948.

Rainfall Totals

Rawalpindi received 67 millimetres of rain at Pirwadhai, 59 millimetres at New Katarian, 55 millimetres at Shamsabad and 47 millimetres at Katcheri. Islamabad recorded heavier totals in places, with 90 millimetres reported at Saidpur, 81 millimetres at Golra, 78 millimetres at Zero Point and 70 millimetres at Bokra. PMD attributed the pattern to monsoon currents penetrating the upper parts of the country, reinforced by a westerly wave affecting the region, while hot and humid weather continued to prevail elsewhere.

The Emergency Response

The Water and Sanitation Agency Rawalpindi placed its operations on high alert and declared a rain emergency, deploying staff and heavy machinery to vulnerable areas including Liaquat Bagh, the Committee Chowk underpass, Murree Road, Dhoke Khabba, Circular Road, Sadiqabad, Pirwadhai and Bohar Bazaar. Authorities urged residents to avoid unnecessary travel, stay away from electricity poles and nullahs, and contact the WASA helpline in the event of an emergency. Floodwater inundated homes in Dhok Khaba, Pirwadhai and Amarpura, while water accumulation on Murree Road and adjoining areas disrupted traffic, with roads in Kohati Bazaar and Dhoke Khabba also affected.

Why This Alert Is Distinct From Earlier Flooding This Month

This marks the third consecutive day of significant rainfall in the twin cities since Monday, and follows an earlier, separate flooding episode on 17 August that affected Mumtaz Town, Dhok Kala Khan, Banaras Colony and Afzal Town, where WASA had similarly declared a rain emergency. Together, the two episodes point to a sustained, still active monsoon pattern rather than an isolated rainfall event, consistent with Nullah Lai's well documented catchment behaviour, a 234.8 square kilometre basin drawing water from the Margalla Hills through Islamabad before reaching Rawalpindi, with water levels rising and falling repeatedly across the same week as successive rain spells move through the region.

What This Means for Residents and Property Owners

Residents in low lying areas along Nullah Lai, including Pirwadhai, Amarpura, Dhok Khaba, Sadiqabad and the neighbourhoods named in this alert, should continue treating flood warning sirens as an immediate signal to move to safer ground rather than waiting to assess conditions personally, particularly given the fatality already reported this week. Property owners in these corridors should expect this pattern of repeated flooding to keep sharpening scrutiny of a property's elevation, drainage history and proximity to the nullah, a factor buyers and renters should weigh directly rather than treat as a one off seasonal inconvenience, given how frequently this specific waterway has triggered emergency response in August alone.
